Comparison

SayScreen vs Camtasia

Camtasia is the classic way to make software tutorials by hand: record on Windows or Mac, then edit on a multitrack timeline with callouts, quizzes and a growing set of AI tools. SayScreen automates the whole job for web apps: describe the lesson and get a narrated, edited video. Choose Camtasia for full control and desktop software; choose SayScreen for speed, and for videos you can remake with one prompt.

Camtasia or SayScreen: which should you choose?

Choose Camtasia if…

  • You want frame-by-frame control on a multitrack timeline: callouts, annotations, transitions, your own music
  • You record desktop software, not just web apps
  • You need quizzes or SCORM packages for an LMS (Essentials and up)
  • You want unlimited recordings on a yearly license, edited on your own computer

Choose SayScreen if…

  • You don't want to learn a video editor: the AI records, narrates and edits from one prompt
  • You make many short tutorials and refresh them whenever the interface changes
  • You want a voiceover without recording one
  • You want the same polish (zooms, a smooth cursor, captions) on every video, automatically

Where Camtasia and SayScreen differ

How much you do

In Camtasia you record the screen, camera and microphone yourself, then edit on a timeline; SmartFocus can add zooms and pans automatically, but the editing is yours. In SayScreen there's no recording session and no timeline: you review the script and the steps, change what you want and re-render.

Narration

Camtasia records your voice, and its Create plan adds AI voiceovers from a script (Pro adds AI avatars and dubbing). SayScreen writes the narration as it works and turns it into an AI voiceover.

Range

Camtasia records anything on a Windows or Mac screen, up to 4K at 60 fps, and exports MP4, GIF or WebM, with quizzes and SCORM for e-learning. SayScreen records web apps in Chrome and exports a 1080p MP4 plus an .srt file.

Pricing

Camtasia is sold yearly: Starter $39 (the editor still watermarks exports), Essentials $179.88, Create $249 and Pro $599; the editor is free to use with a watermark. SayScreen is $1 for your first 7 days, then $29 a month for 30 videos, up to 10 minutes each.
